Safer Together Chats with the York County Saf: After the sirens fade: An officer and therapist reflect on losing four officers this past year.

We often expect police officers to be real-life superheroes, bouncing from one critical incident to another with little to no emotional response. The reality is that law enforcement officers are human, experiencing grief, loss, and emotional pain just like the rest of us.

In this Safer Together Chat, Corporal Andrew Miller of the Northern York County Regional Police Department sits down with Lisa Zoll, owner and clinical director of Grief Relief, LLC, a therapy practice specializing in first responders. Together, they reflect on the loss of four York County police officers in 2025: Andrew Duarte, Cody Becker, Mark Baker, and Isaiah Emenheiser.

Miller shares the personal toll of continuing police work after their deaths—including returning to work the next day to a nearly empty parking lot, save for the three officers lost in the September tragedy. Miller and Zoll also discuss the often-unseen emotional labor of preparing for line-of-duty funerals, and why prioritizing officer wellness, peer support, and access to mental health care is essential—not only after tragedy, but as an ongoing part of the job.
